Westfield Public Thoroughfare - no right to block access

I’m not sure if this has been done before but I have only just seen this video - it’s years old !

Basically Ken Livingstone telling the police they don’t work for Westfield and when permission was granted for Westfield it was on the basis that it would remain a public thoroughfare from Stratford to the Olympic site.

Whether you like Ken or not, he makes a great point to the old bill in this vid. It also raises a question on the legality of Westfield blocking access to West Ham supporters on match days.

Has anyone ever been to a concert at the stadium?

Is the crowd control the same once the concert ends?

I notice that they didn’t block access to Westfield for all those protesting against the Vue showing The Lady of Heaven.

Why are supporters prevented from using Westfield to access the station?

Part of the planning approval for the use of the Stadium going back to The Olympics, is that there should be no real detrimental effect on other residents and businesses of Newham: therefore Westfield passengers have priority in use of the station. It is also unsafe to attempt to implement a holding point within the confines of Westfield. That means supporter egress through Westfield has to be stopped and supporters directed to use alternative routes.

It's private land, including the roads around the centre which are also not public rights of way, unlike the old Stratford centre which has a public right of way right through the centre.

Seems perfectly sensible to me. Why would the owners want to have tens of thousands of people walking straight through the centre when they can be directed around each side. to the station. Nothing to stop you going for a beer or a bite to eat afterwards once you've walked round to the entrance.

They dress like the Police and act like the police but don’t have any legal right to.

I’ve seen in Manchester that the council are employing private companies to try to fine people for dropping litter - they shouldn’t drop litter but then these companies shouldn’t pretend they have legal rights to fine you

Canary Wharf was given by the Thatcher government lock stock and barrel and is entirely privately owned, there is no public right of way through anything on the estate.

However, the security there act like they are the Police. In fact they act like they are the Police still in the 1970s.

I don’t think everyone would go through and by restricting access is just creates a larger jam somewhere else.

Also, if Westfield don’t have a legal right to block access then they are taking a liberty that everyone have accepted.

It seems pretty sensible for various reasons not to have 30,000 extra people entering and walking through a shopping centre basically all at once in a big crowd on a Saturday afternoon. I can see why they do what they do.

That pub on the corner, the cow I think it's called must really fucking detest those barriers at full time. Surely it's in their interest to have them not there to allow alot more punters in.

Be interesting to see if there's anything to this public thoroughfare business and whether it was guaranteed in the planning application. I won't pretend to know anything about it. I can't wrap my head around it from an economic point of view. Shepherding thousands of people past empty food and drink establishments is pretty poor business in my point of view. The modern football fan isn't likely to start throwing chairs around the gaff. Especially the ones going that way.

It's not blocked before the game, only after, which is understandable
